Kevin Martin
Kevin Martin won Olympic gold in curling at the 2010 Vancouver Games on home Canadian soil, capping a career that included four World Championship titles and establishing him as one of the most statistically dominant skips in the history of competitive curling. His nickname "The Old Bear" reflected both his sustained excellence well into his forties and his methodical, tactically conservative playing style, which prioritized consistent, low-risk shot-making over the more aggressive, high-variance approaches some rival skips favored. Martin's Vancouver gold came after a heartbreaking silver medal finish at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, where his team lost the final in an upset, giving his eventual 2010 triumph particular significance as a redemption arc nearly a decade in the making. His combined Olympic gold, four World Championship titles, and numerous Canadian national championships across a career spanning more than two decades established Martin as one of the most consistently dominant skips in curling history, particularly within Canada, historically the sport's deepest and most competitive national program.
VS
Eve Muirhead
Eve Muirhead led Great Britain's women's curling team to Olympic gold at the 2022 Beijing Games, becoming one of the most celebrated curlers in British Olympic history and capping a competitive career that had included multiple previous Olympic appearances without reaching the top of the podium. Muirhead became the youngest ever World Curling Championship skip at 20 years old when she first led a rink to that title, establishing her as one of the sport's most precocious talents before she'd even reached her competitive prime. Her combination of technical shot-making precision and calm tactical leadership under pressure made Muirhead one of the most respected skips in international women's curling throughout the 2010s, even during years when her team fell short of medal contention at major championships. Her eventual 2022 Olympic gold, achieved in what was announced as her final competitive Olympics, capped a career that had built steadily toward that ultimate achievement across more than a decade of world-class competition, and Muirhead remains the standard-bearer for British curling's continued competitive relevance internationally.
