Kevin Martin
Kevin Martin won Olympic gold in curling at the 2010 Vancouver Games on home Canadian soil, capping a career that included four World Championship titles and establishing him as one of the most statistically dominant skips in the history of competitive curling. His nickname "The Old Bear" reflected both his sustained excellence well into his forties and his methodical, tactically conservative playing style, which prioritized consistent, low-risk shot-making over the more aggressive, high-variance approaches some rival skips favored. Martin's Vancouver gold came after a heartbreaking silver medal finish at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, where his team lost the final in an upset, giving his eventual 2010 triumph particular significance as a redemption arc nearly a decade in the making. His combined Olympic gold, four World Championship titles, and numerous Canadian national championships across a career spanning more than two decades established Martin as one of the most consistently dominant skips in curling history, particularly within Canada, historically the sport's deepest and most competitive national program.
VS
John Shuster
John Shuster led the United States men's curling team to a surprise Olympic gold medal at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, the first gold medal in US Olympic curling history, capping a career that had included a widely criticized last-place finish at the 2014 Sochi Olympics just four years earlier. His team's underdog run through the 2018 Olympic tournament, including a decisive victory over heavily favored Sweden in the gold medal match, made Shuster's rink one of the most celebrated American Olympic curling stories and significantly raised the sport's domestic profile in the United States. Shuster's redemption arc, moving from a nationally mocked last-place finish in 2014 to Olympic champion four years later, became one of the most widely discussed comeback narratives of the 2018 Winter Olympics, drawing mainstream American sports media attention to curling in a way the sport rarely receives domestically. His Olympic gold established Shuster as the most significant figure in American curling history, and his team's underdog triumph is credited with meaningfully increasing recreational curling participation and interest across the United States in the years following the 2018 Games.
