Khabib Nurmagomedov
Khabib Nurmagomedov retired in 2020 with a perfect 29-0 professional record, becoming the only fighter in UFC lightweight championship history to leave the sport completely undefeated — a career built almost entirely around a suffocating wrestling and grappling-based control style that few opponents ever found an answer for. Nurmagomedov won the UFC lightweight championship in 2018 and defended it three times, including a headline win over Conor McGregor at UFC 229 that remains one of the highest pay-per-view draws in UFC history, and a final title defense against Justin Gaethje in 2020 that he dedicated to his father and longtime coach, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, who had died of COVID-19 complications weeks earlier. His dominance was built on an almost unmatched takedown success rate and top-position control, statistically the most dominant grappling numbers of any UFC champion — opponents frequently spent entire rounds unable to escape from beneath him, a style that proved just as effective against strikers as against fellow grapplers. Nurmagomedov announced his retirement immediately after the Gaethje fight, honoring a promise he'd made to his mother not to fight again without his father in his corner, closing out his career at 29-0 and walking away from the sport at the height of his championship reign rather than fighting into a decline.
VS
Amanda Nunes
Amanda Nunes became the first fighter, male or female, to simultaneously hold two UFC championships in different weight classes when she added the featherweight title to her existing bantamweight belt in 2018, a two-division reign she'd go on to defend across both weight classes for years afterward. Nicknamed "The Lioness," Nunes's résumé includes wins over two of the sport's other most dominant former champions: a first-round knockout of Ronda Rousey in 2016 that ended Rousey's UFC career, and a decision win over Cris Cyborg in 2018 that unified the featherweight title — two of the most anticipated superfights in UFC women's division history, both settled decisively in Nunes's favor. Nunes retired in 2023 as the UFC's most decorated women's champion, holding UFC records for most wins in women's bantamweight championship fights and among the longest combined title reigns across two divisions of any fighter, male or female, in the promotion's history. Her combination of knockout power and grappling credentials made her one of the few fighters in either the men's or women's divisions genuinely feared everywhere a fight could go — standing or on the ground — a versatility that underpinned her case as the greatest women's MMA fighter of all time.
