King Crimson
King Crimson's 1969 debut album In the Court of the Crimson King is widely regarded as one of the foundational albums that launched progressive rock as a genre, blending jazz, classical, and psychedelic rock influences into a genuinely new compositional approach for rock music. Guitarist and founding member Robert Fripp's continued leadership of the band across dramatically different lineups and musical eras, spanning from the late 1960s through the 2000s and beyond, gave King Crimson one of the most fluid and continuously evolving lineups of any major rock band, with Fripp as the only consistent member across the band's entire history. The band's willingness to repeatedly disband and reform with entirely different musical directions and personnel, rather than maintaining a consistent sound across their career, reflected Fripp's stated philosophy of treating King Crimson as an ongoing creative concept rather than a fixed band identity. King Crimson's combination of genuinely founding the progressive rock genre with their debut album and their subsequent decades of continuous creative reinvention under Fripp's leadership has made them one of the most artistically uncompromising and historically foundational bands in progressive rock's development.
VS
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Emerson, Lake & Palmer, formed in 1970 by musicians from three previously separate bands, became one of the most commercially successful progressive rock acts of the 1970s, built around keyboardist Keith Emerson's virtuosic, classically trained playing style incorporated directly into rock arrangements. Emerson's elaborate live performances, including using knives to hold down organ keys and physically wrestling with his instrument on stage, made ELP's concerts among the most visually theatrical of the progressive rock era, blending genuine musical virtuosity with genuinely spectacular showmanship. The band's adaptations of classical compositions, including their reworking of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, reflected progressive rock's broader tendency to directly incorporate classical music repertoire into rock arrangements, a technique ELP pursued more directly and extensively than most genre peers. ELP's combination of Emerson's genuinely virtuosic classical-influenced keyboard playing and their massive, elaborately staged live shows made them one of the most commercially successful and technically ambitious progressive rock acts of the genre's 1970s commercial peak.
