Korn
Korn's 1994 self-titled debut album is widely credited as one of the foundational texts that launched nu metal as a distinct genre, blending heavy, downtuned guitar riffs with hip-hop-influenced rhythms and frontman Jonathan Davis's raw, emotionally exposed lyrical content addressing childhood trauma and abuse. The band's use of seven-string guitars, tuned unusually low to create a heavier, more percussive sound, became a defining sonic signature that numerous subsequent nu metal bands directly adopted, significantly shaping the genre's overall guitar tone. Korn's 1998 album Follow the Leader debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, reflecting the band's massive commercial breakthrough during nu metal's late-1990s mainstream peak, and their sustained popularity helped establish Southern California as one of the genre's most significant regional scenes. Their combination of genuinely foundational sonic innovation and Davis's unusually raw emotional vulnerability within an aggressive musical framework has made Korn the band most consistently cited as nu metal's founding and most influential act.
VS
System of a Down
System of a Down, formed by musicians of Armenian descent, blended nu metal's heavy sound with genuinely unconventional song structures, unpredictable tempo changes, and explicitly political lyrical content, distinguishing them musically and thematically from more straightforwardly aggressive genre contemporaries. Their 2005 double album release Mezmerize and Hypnotize, released in the same year, both debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, an unusual commercial achievement reflecting the band's massive popularity despite their genuinely unconventional, less radio-formulaic songwriting approach. The band's sustained advocacy for recognition of the Armenian Genocide, including direct references in their music and public statements, gave System of a Down a level of explicit political and historical engagement uncommon among mainstream rock acts of their commercial stature. Their combination of genuinely unconventional musical structure and their explicit political and cultural advocacy has made System of a Down one of the most artistically distinctive and thematically substantive bands to emerge from the broader nu metal movement.
