Krispy Kreme
Krispy Kreme was founded in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1937 by Vernon Rudolph, who purchased a secret yeast-raised donut recipe from a New Orleans chef, building a Southern institution centered on its signature Original Glazed donut served warm off the production line. The chain's iconic "Hot Light" signage, illuminated whenever a fresh batch of Original Glazed donuts is coming off the line, became one of the most recognized pieces of American fast-food retail signaling, actively drawing customers in specifically for the fresh-off-the-line experience. Krispy Kreme's visible, glass-walled donut-making production lines in many of its stores let customers watch the entire glazing process in real time, turning donut production itself into a form of in-store entertainment distinct from most competing chains. Krispy Kreme's combination of its iconic Hot Light signaling system and its visible in-store donut production has made it one of the most recognizable donut chains in the country.

Stan's Donuts
Stan's Donuts was founded in Westwood, near UCLA, in 1965 by Stan Berman, who became known for personally handing out free donuts to students during exam weeks, building a devoted campus-area following that helped the small shop become a genuine Los Angeles institution. The original Westwood location closed in 2003, and the brand was later revived and expanded by new owners into a small multi-city chain, including locations in Chicago, while working to preserve recipes and a customer experience true to Berman's original shop. Stan's became particularly known for its peanut butter chocolate donut, a specific flavor combination that developed a devoted cult following distinct from more traditional glazed or filled donut varieties offered by larger chains. Stan's Donuts's combination of its beloved original campus-area shop culture and its successful modern revival into new cities has made it one of the more nostalgically regarded independent donut brands in the country.
