Kyoto Animation
Kyoto Animation was founded in 1981, initially working as a subcontracted in-between animation studio for other larger production houses before growing into an independent studio producing its own original series, becoming particularly known for its unusually high production quality and consistent house animation style. The studio built a devoted fan following for series including "K-On!," "Violet Evergarden," and "A Silent Voice," known for detailed character animation and emotionally nuanced storytelling that distinguished Kyoto Animation's output from studios prioritizing faster production schedules over animation density. On July 18, 2019, an arson attack on the studio's main building killed 36 people and injured dozens more, one of the deadliest mass killings in modern Japanese history, and the tragedy prompted an outpouring of international support and donations from anime fans worldwide who had come to deeply admire the studio's work. Kyoto Animation's combination of its distinctively high-quality, emotionally driven animation style and the devastating 2019 arson attack that killed 36 of its staff has made it one of the most artistically respected and, tragically, historically significant studios in anime history.
VS
Toei Animation
Toei Animation was founded in 1948 in Tokyo, making it one of the oldest continuously operating animation studios in Japan, and the company became particularly significant for producing some of the longest-running and most commercially successful anime franchises in the medium's history. The studio produced "Dragon Ball," "One Piece," and "Sailor Moon," each of which became major international franchises spanning decades of continuous television production, extensive merchandise licensing, and significant influence on the broader development of anime as a globally exported entertainment category. Toei's earlier feature film work in the 1950s and 1960s, sometimes referred to as "Toei Doga" during that period, played a foundational role establishing Japanese theatrical animation before the studio's later pivot toward the long-running television series format that came to define much of its subsequent output. Toei Animation's combination of its status as one of Japan's oldest animation studios and its production of some of anime's longest-running global franchises has made it one of the most historically and commercially significant anime studios in the industry.
