La Jolla, CA
La Jolla sits on a dramatic stretch of Pacific coastline within San Diego's city limits, and its rocky coves and sea caves, most famously at La Jolla Cove, have made it one of the more geologically distinctive and consistently photographed shorelines anywhere in Southern California, with a resident colony of sea lions and harbor seals that's become a major draw in its own right. The University of California, San Diego, one of the top-ranked public research universities in the country, occupies a substantial coastal campus at La Jolla's northern edge, and the neighborhood is also home to the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, whose Louis Kahn-designed concrete complex is regarded as one of the most architecturally significant modern research buildings in the country. The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and a concentration of galleries along Prospect Street have given La Jolla's compact village center a genuine arts identity layered on top of its coastal scenery, drawing visitors for gallery walks and oceanview dining well beyond just beach access. La Jolla's combination of dramatically distinctive coastal geology, a major research university and biomedical research presence, and a genuine gallery and arts district has made it one of the most internationally recognized coastal neighborhoods anywhere in the greater San Diego area.
VS
Coronado, CA
Coronado sits on a peninsula across San Diego Bay from downtown, connected to the mainland both by the iconic Coronado Bridge, a sweeping curved span completed in 1969, and by a long sandy isthmus called the Silver Strand that connects it to Imperial Beach to the south. The Hotel del Coronado, an enormous Victorian beachfront resort that opened in 1888, remains one of the most architecturally distinctive and historically significant wooden structures on the entire West Coast, and it's widely believed to have inspired the mythical Emerald City in L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, with Baum reportedly having stayed at the hotel while writing. Naval Air Station North Island, occupying a substantial portion of the peninsula, has been a major US Navy installation since the early 20th century and is considered the birthplace of American naval aviation, giving Coronado a genuine and long-running military identity alongside its resort-town reputation. Coronado's combination of one of the most architecturally significant historic beach hotels in the country, a direct literary connection to one of American literature's most enduring stories, and a major naval aviation installation has made it one of the most distinctive small cities anywhere on the Southern California coast.
