La Jolla Cove
La Jolla Cove, a small, sheltered beach ringed by sandstone cliffs, is one of the most consistently top-ranked beaches in San Diego for snorkeling and scuba diving, sitting directly within the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve and its protected marine habitat. Its position adjacent to the Point La Jolla sea lion and harbor seal colonies makes it one of the most reliable places in the entire county to see wild marine mammals up close, with sea lions frequently hauling out directly onto the cove's rocks and adjacent walkways. The cove's clear, calm water, protected from much of the open ocean's larger swell by the surrounding cliffs, has made it one of the most popular open-water swimming spots in San Diego, including as the finish point for the long-running La Jolla Rough Water Swim held there annually since 1916. For a San Diego beaches list, La Jolla Cove is the essential "wildlife and clear water" entry — a small, cliff-ringed cove offering some of the county's best snorkeling and the near-guaranteed chance to see sea lions and seals up close.
VS
Pacific Beach
Pacific Beach, anchored by Crystal Pier and its distinctive over-the-water cottages available for overnight rental, built its identity around a lively boardwalk scene, dense concentration of beachfront bars and restaurants, and a younger, more nightlife-driven crowd than San Diego's quieter northern beaches. Its wide, sandy shoreline and consistent, moderate surf make it one of the most popular beaches in the city for beginner surfers and longboarders specifically, with numerous surf schools operating directly along the beach to take advantage of its generally manageable wave conditions. The neighborhood surrounding the beach, known locally as "PB," has developed one of San Diego's most concentrated beach-adjacent bar and restaurant scenes, giving Pacific Beach a distinctly more social, nightlife-oriented identity than the more subdued beach towns further up the coast. For a San Diego beaches list, Pacific Beach is the essential "boardwalk and nightlife" entry — a lively, pier-anchored beach whose dense bar scene and beginner-friendly surf have made it the county's most social, younger-skewing beach neighborhood.
