Lake Tahoe, California
Lake Tahoe's basin holds more than a dozen distinct ski resorts spread across both the California and Nevada sides of the lake, giving the region one of the highest concentrations of skiable terrain of any single destination area in North America rather than relying on a single dominant mountain. Palisades Tahoe, formerly known as Squaw Valley, hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics, the first Winter Games held in the western United States, and the resort's Olympic legacy remains visible in its facilities and its long-standing reputation as one of the more challenging, expert-oriented resorts in the Tahoe basin. The lake itself, one of the largest and deepest alpine lakes in North America, gives the region a genuinely dual identity — a winter ski destination and a summer lake-recreation destination — that few other major American ski areas can match, since most ski-resort towns built at lower elevations don't have a comparable large natural lake anchoring their off-season tourism economy. Lake Tahoe's combination of its dozen-plus distinct resorts spread across two states, Palisades Tahoe's 1960 Olympic legacy, and the lake's own year-round dual-season tourism draw has made the broader Tahoe basin one of the most versatile and consistently popular ski destinations in the entire country.
VS
Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort has built its reputation specifically around expert-level terrain, with the resort's famous Corbet's Couloir — a narrow chute requiring a mandatory cliff jump of ten to twenty feet just to enter it — widely regarded as one of the most intimidating inbound ski runs at any resort in North America. The resort's aerial tram, nicknamed "Big Red," rises over 4,000 vertical feet from base to summit in roughly nine minutes, one of the largest continuous vertical rises of any single lift in the country, giving skiers access to sustained steep terrain without the multiple lift transfers many other large resorts require. Jackson Hole's position at the base of the Teton Range, directly adjacent to Grand Teton National Park, gives the resort a genuinely dramatic mountain backdrop distinct from resorts built into more rounded, forested terrain, and the nearby town of Jackson has retained a Western ranching-town character alongside its ski-resort economy. Jackson Hole's combination of some of the most challenging inbound expert terrain in North America, the dramatic vertical rise of its aerial tram, and its position directly beneath the Teton Range has made it the resort most specifically associated with serious, expert-level skiing rather than a broader family-vacation ski experience.
