Lake Tahoe, California
Lake Tahoe's basin holds more than a dozen distinct ski resorts spread across both the California and Nevada sides of the lake, giving the region one of the highest concentrations of skiable terrain of any single destination area in North America rather than relying on a single dominant mountain. Palisades Tahoe, formerly known as Squaw Valley, hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics, the first Winter Games held in the western United States, and the resort's Olympic legacy remains visible in its facilities and its long-standing reputation as one of the more challenging, expert-oriented resorts in the Tahoe basin. The lake itself, one of the largest and deepest alpine lakes in North America, gives the region a genuinely dual identity — a winter ski destination and a summer lake-recreation destination — that few other major American ski areas can match, since most ski-resort towns built at lower elevations don't have a comparable large natural lake anchoring their off-season tourism economy. Lake Tahoe's combination of its dozen-plus distinct resorts spread across two states, Palisades Tahoe's 1960 Olympic legacy, and the lake's own year-round dual-season tourism draw has made the broader Tahoe basin one of the most versatile and consistently popular ski destinations in the entire country.
VS
St. Moritz, Switzerland
St. Moritz is widely credited with inventing winter tourism itself — in 1864, hotelier Johannes Badrutt reportedly wagered a group of British summer guests that they'd enjoy the Alpine winter just as much as summer, offering to cover their travel costs if they weren't satisfied, a bet he won decisively and one that's credited with launching the entire concept of a winter mountain vacation. The resort town has hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1928 and 1948, making it one of only a handful of locations in the world to host the Winter Games more than once, and it remains one of the most consistently prestigious and expensive ski destinations in the entire Alps. St. Moritz has also built a significant identity beyond skiing itself, hosting winter sporting events on the frozen surface of Lake St. Moritz, including polo matches and horse racing held directly on the ice, a genuinely unusual pairing of traditional equestrian sport with an Alpine ski resort setting. St. Moritz's combination of its foundational role in inventing winter tourism itself, hosting the Winter Olympics twice, and its unusual ice-based equestrian sporting culture has made it one of the most historically significant and enduringly prestigious ski destinations anywhere in the world.
