Langston University
Langston University, founded in 1897, is Oklahoma's only historically Black university, and the town of Langston itself was founded as one of dozens of all-Black towns established in Oklahoma Territory during the post-Reconstruction era, giving the university a direct historical connection to that specific chapter of American Black settlement history. The university's agricultural research, particularly its work on goat and small ruminant livestock production through its E (Kika) de la Garza Institute for Goat Research, has built a nationally significant research niche uncommon among most other American universities of any size. Langston's education and nursing programs have built solid regional reputations, and the university's continued mission serving Oklahoma's Black community, alongside its unique historical connection to the state's all-Black town settlement history, gives Langston an institutional identity distinct from any other university in the state. The university's combination of its historic all-Black town setting, its specific and nationally significant goat research program, and its role as Oklahoma's sole HBCU has made Langston University one of the most historically and institutionally distinctive universities in the state.
VS
Oral Roberts University
Oral Roberts University, founded in 1963 by evangelist Oral Roberts, is one of the most prominent charismatic Christian universities in the country, and its campus's distinctive modernist architecture, including the 200-foot Prayer Tower topped by a crown-shaped observation deck, reflects the university's founding-era architectural ambitions. The university requires all students to maintain a personal physical fitness program as part of its holistic educational philosophy, reflecting founder Oral Roberts's explicit institutional commitment to developing students "spirit, mind, and body" simultaneously, a health-focused stipulation unusual among American universities. ORU's business and nursing programs have built solid regional reputations, and the university's continued charismatic Christian institutional identity, including mandatory chapel attendance and religious coursework, shapes campus culture throughout a student's undergraduate experience. The university's distinctive founding architecture, its holistic "spirit, mind, and body" educational philosophy, and its continued charismatic Christian mission have made Oral Roberts University one of the most visually and institutionally distinctive religious universities in the country.
