Larry Wheels
Larry Wheels built one of the largest social media followings of any strength athlete in history, and his willingness to publicly document his training, competition results, and use of performance-enhancing substances gave him an unusually transparent public relationship with his own strength sport career. His combined competitive achievements across powerlifting, arm wrestling, and strongman competitions reflected a genuinely cross-disciplinary approach to strength sports uncommon among competitors who typically specialize in a single discipline throughout their careers. Wheels's massive online audience, built substantially through his willingness to train and compete alongside other prominent strength athletes and document those sessions for public viewing, made him one of the most commercially significant figures in contemporary strength sports content specifically. His combination of genuine cross-disciplinary competitive strength achievements and his unprecedented social media reach has made Wheels one of the most publicly visible and commercially significant strength athletes of the current generation, even as more traditionalist powerlifting purists have sometimes debated his relative standing among the sport's most decorated pure competitors.
VS
Ed Coan
Ed Coan is widely regarded as the greatest powerlifter in the sport's history, having set more than 70 world records across his career and remaining the only lifter to hold world records in the squat, bench press, and deadlift simultaneously across multiple different weight classes. His pound-for-pound total, the combined weight lifted across all three competitive lifts relative to his own body weight, remains the statistical benchmark against which subsequent powerlifters across every weight class are measured, reflecting an unusual combination of relative and absolute strength. Coan's sustained dominance across more than two decades of competition, continuing to set world records well into his forties, established a level of career longevity in a sport that places extreme physical demands on the body that few competitors have matched. His combination of record-setting absolute strength and his unmatched pound-for-pound relative strength across an unusually long competitive career has made Coan the powerlifter most universally cited as the greatest in the sport's history.
