Lawrence University
Lawrence University, founded in 1847, combines a traditional liberal arts college with the Lawrence Conservatory of Music, one of the relatively few standalone music conservatories fully integrated within a liberal arts institution, letting students pursue a full liberal arts degree alongside rigorous conservatory-level musical training. The university's small size, around 1,500 undergraduates, and its riverside campus along the Fox River in Appleton, Wisconsin, give Lawrence an intimate residential college feel distinct from larger Midwestern research universities. Lawrence's tutorial and independent study opportunities, along with its relatively unusual "Freshman Studies" required seminar spanning both semesters of a student's first year, reflect the university's emphasis on close faculty engagement and interdisciplinary intellectual grounding from the very start of a student's academic career. The combination of Lawrence's genuine conservatory-level music training and its broader liberal arts curriculum has made it a distinctive choice among students specifically seeking that dual academic and musical track, occupying a similar niche in the Midwest that Oberlin College's conservatory holds in Ohio.
VS
University of Wisconsin-Madison
The University of Wisconsin-Madison, founded in 1848, is one of the top public research universities in the country, and its "Wisconsin Idea," a founding institutional philosophy holding that the university's research and teaching should directly serve the entire state rather than remaining confined to campus, has shaped the school's public mission for well over a century. The university's campus sits directly on the shores of Lake Mendota, and its Memorial Union Terrace, with its brightly colored sunburst chairs facing the lake, has become one of the most recognizable and photographed public gathering spaces at any American university. UW-Madison's agricultural and life sciences programs rank among the very best in the country, reflecting the university's land-grant mission, and its journalism, business, and engineering programs have each built strong national reputations as well, giving the university comprehensive strength across a wide range of academic fields. The university's research funding regularly ranks among the top handful of American universities for total federal research dollars received, and UW-Madison's combination of research-university scale, a passionate Big Ten athletic culture, and its distinctive lakefront campus setting has made it one of the most consistently popular public universities in the country among both in-state and out-of-state applicants.
