Lay's
Lay's was founded by Herman Lay, who began his career in 1932 as a traveling potato chip salesman in Nashville before purchasing the Atlanta-based company he had been distributing for and renaming it after himself, eventually growing it into one of the largest snack food companies in the American South. Lay's became particularly known for its long-running advertising slogan "Betcha Can't Eat Just One," and the brand's endorsement deal with former NFL quarterback-turned-broadcaster Bert Reynolds and later other celebrity spokespeople helped build significant mainstream advertising visibility for the brand throughout the mid-20th century. Lay's merged with Frito Company in 1961 to form Frito-Lay, and PepsiCo acquired Frito-Lay in 1965, giving Lay's access to PepsiCo's massive global distribution network and helping the brand grow into the best-selling potato chip brand in the world. Lay's combination of its founder's rise from traveling salesman to snack food executive and its subsequent growth into the world's best-selling potato chip brand under PepsiCo ownership has made it one of the most commercially dominant snack brands in the world.
VS
Pringles
Pringles was developed by Procter & Gamble and launched in 1968, engineered specifically to solve problems associated with traditional potato chips, including breakage during shipping and inconsistent shapes, by creating a uniformly saddle-shaped chip made from a dehydrated potato-based dough rather than sliced whole potatoes. The chip's distinctive tall cylindrical can, designed to prevent the crushing and breakage common with bag-packaged chips, became one of the brand's most recognizable and legally significant design features, and the container's inventor, Fredric Baur, was so proud of the design that part of his cremated remains were reportedly placed inside a Pringles can at his request. Because Pringles are made from reconstituted potato dough rather than being sliced directly from whole potatoes, the product faced early regulatory and labeling disputes in several countries over whether it could legally be marketed simply as a "potato chip" or required a different classification. Pringles's combination of its engineering-driven uniform-shape design solving shipping and packaging problems and its inventor's famously devoted attachment to the product's iconic can has made it one of the most distinctively engineered snack brands in the food industry.
