LBJ Presidential Library
The LBJ Presidential Library opened in 1971, while Lyndon B. Johnson was still alive, making it one of the few presidential libraries a former president was able to see completed and visit regularly during his own lifetime, and it sits on the University of Texas at Austin campus rather than in Johnson's hometown. The library holds an enormous archive of Johnson's presidential papers, and its exhibits document his presidency's genuinely consequential and often contradictory legacy — the sweeping civil rights and social welfare legislation of the Great Society alongside the escalation of the Vietnam War, two legacies the museum addresses directly rather than favoring one over the other. A notable exhibit includes a life-sized animatronic figure of Johnson himself telling stories in his own recorded voice, an unusual and now dated presentation choice from the library's original 1971 design that's been preserved as a genuine period piece of presidential-museum exhibition style. For a Austin attractions list, the LBJ Presidential Library is the essential "the president who watched his own library open" entry — a 1971 archive built while Johnson was still alive, documenting both the Great Society and Vietnam within the same unflinching exhibit space.

South Congress Avenue
South Congress Avenue, commonly known as "SoCo," developed its current identity gradually beginning in the 1990s, when a stretch of what had been a fairly rundown commercial strip south of the river was revitalized into a corridor of vintage shops, independent boutiques, and locally owned restaurants and food trucks. The street offers one of the most iconic views of the Texas State Capitol dome framed directly at the end of the avenue, a sightline that's made South Congress one of the most photographed streets in Austin, particularly from the steps of the nearby Congress Avenue Bridge bat-viewing area. The strip has become closely associated with Austin's broader "Keep Austin Weird" identity, an informal slogan promoting support for local independent businesses over chain retail, with South Congress's mix of eclectic boutiques and food trucks frequently cited as one of the clearest physical expressions of that broader civic attitude. For a Austin attractions list, South Congress Avenue is the essential "Keep Austin Weird, made physical" entry — a 1990s-revitalized commercial strip lined with independent shops and food trucks, framed by one of the city's most photographed views of the Capitol dome.
