LBJ Presidential Library
The LBJ Presidential Library opened in 1971, while Lyndon B. Johnson was still alive, making it one of the few presidential libraries a former president was able to see completed and visit regularly during his own lifetime, and it sits on the University of Texas at Austin campus rather than in Johnson's hometown. The library holds an enormous archive of Johnson's presidential papers, and its exhibits document his presidency's genuinely consequential and often contradictory legacy — the sweeping civil rights and social welfare legislation of the Great Society alongside the escalation of the Vietnam War, two legacies the museum addresses directly rather than favoring one over the other. A notable exhibit includes a life-sized animatronic figure of Johnson himself telling stories in his own recorded voice, an unusual and now dated presentation choice from the library's original 1971 design that's been preserved as a genuine period piece of presidential-museum exhibition style. For a Austin attractions list, the LBJ Presidential Library is the essential "the president who watched his own library open" entry — a 1971 archive built while Johnson was still alive, documenting both the Great Society and Vietnam within the same unflinching exhibit space.
VS
Texas State Capitol
The Texas State Capitol was completed in 1888, built from distinctive pink granite quarried from Granite Mountain near Marble Falls, Texas, after the original limestone capitol building burned down in 1881, and Texans reportedly traded the granite quarry's owners a portion of West Texas land in exchange for the stone used in construction. At just under 15 feet taller than the US Capitol in Washington, DC, the Texas Capitol is the largest state capitol building in the country by square footage, a scale reflecting Texas's own outsized self-image as a state that was briefly an independent republic before joining the Union. The building's dome is topped by the Goddess of Liberty statue, and the Capitol grounds include numerous monuments to Texas history, including memorials to the Alamo defenders and Texas Rangers, reflecting the building's role as a genuine civic monument to Texas's distinct historical identity as much as a functioning seat of government. For a Austin attractions list, the Texas State Capitol is the essential "bigger than Washington's, on purpose" entry — an 1888 pink-granite statehouse deliberately built taller than the US Capitol, reflecting Texas's own history as a onetime independent republic.
