Le Corbusier
Le Corbusier, born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret in Switzerland, became one of the most influential pioneers of modernist architecture in the early-to-mid 20th century, developing his "Five Points of Architecture" principles that emphasized pilotis supports, open floor plans, and flat roof terraces. Le Corbusier's 1931 Villa Savoye outside Paris became one of the most studied and celebrated buildings in the history of modern architecture, widely cited as a definitive physical realization of his International Style design principles that rejected ornamental historical architectural styles. Le Corbusier's urban planning theories, proposing dense high-rise towers surrounded by open green space rather than traditional dense street-level city blocks, proved enormously influential on 20th-century public housing and urban development worldwide, though his ideas also drew significant later criticism for contributing to isolating, poorly integrated housing projects. Le Corbusier's combination of his foundational Five Points of Architecture and his globally influential, if later contested, urban planning theories has made him one of the most consequential architects in the history of modernism.
VS
I.M. Pei
I.M. Pei was born in Guangzhou, China in 1917 and emigrated to the United States in 1935 to study architecture, eventually becoming one of the most celebrated modernist architects of the 20th century, known for combining geometric precision with monumental scale. Pei's most globally famous work, the glass pyramid entrance to the Louvre Museum in Paris, completed in 1989, was initially highly controversial among French critics and the public for its stark modern design juxtaposed against the historic palace, before eventually becoming one of the most iconic architectural landmarks in the world. Pei received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1983, and his broader portfolio includes the National Gallery of Art's East Building in Washington, D.C. and the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, reflecting a career spanning major institutional and civic architecture across multiple continents. I.M. Pei's combination of his initially controversial but ultimately beloved Louvre Pyramid design and his decades-long career spanning major institutional architecture worldwide has made him one of the most influential architects of the 20th century.
