Lee's Summit, MO
Lee's Summit sits on the Missouri side of the greater Kansas City metro area, and its historic downtown, built around the town's founding as a railroad stop in the 1860s, has preserved a cluster of late-19th-century commercial buildings that the city has actively maintained even as substantial newer residential development has grown up around it. The city's name reportedly traces back to a pre-Civil War rivalry between two competing town founders, William B. Howard and Pleasant Graves Lea, with "Lee's Summit" eventually winning out as a term of some local dispute over whose settlement should carry the name — a small but genuinely contested piece of local founding history. Lee's Summit has grown substantially over the past several decades as part of the broader Kansas City metro area's eastward expansion, transforming from a smaller railroad town into one of the larger cities in the Missouri side of the metro area while working to keep its historic downtown square as a genuine civic center. Lee's Summit's combination of a preserved 19th-century railroad-town downtown, a genuinely contested founding history, and substantial sustained suburban growth has made it one of the more historically grounded and consistently expanding suburbs anywhere on the Missouri side of the greater Kansas City metropolitan area.
VS
Olathe, KS
Olathe serves as the county seat of Johnson County and has grown into one of the larger cities in the entire state of Kansas, its expansion driven substantially by both residential growth and a significant corporate and manufacturing employment base along its Interstate 35 and K-10 highway corridors. Garmin International, the GPS and wearable technology company, has been headquartered in Olathe since the 1990s, giving the city a globally recognized technology company anchor well beyond what a typical suburb of its size would host. The city's historic downtown square, built around the Johnson County Courthouse, has been preserved alongside Olathe's substantial newer commercial and residential development, giving longtime residents a walkable historic core distinct from the city's more sprawling suburban growth. Olathe's combination of serving as Johnson County's seat of government, hosting Garmin's global headquarters, and preserving a historic downtown square amid substantial growth has made it one of the more economically significant and rapidly expanding suburbs anywhere in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area.
