Lego
Lego was founded in 1932 in Billund, Denmark by Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter who originally made wooden toys before the company introduced its now-famous interlocking plastic brick system in 1958, a design whose stud-and-tube coupling mechanism has remained essentially unchanged for compatibility across generations of sets ever since. The company's name derives from the Danish phrase "leg godt," meaning "play well," and Lego's commitment to backward compatibility means bricks manufactured in 1958 can still physically connect with pieces produced today, a deliberate engineering consistency almost unheard of in the toy industry. Lego expanded significantly beyond generic building bricks into licensed sets tied to major entertainment franchises, including Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Marvel, alongside its own original properties like Ninjago, and the company has repeatedly ranked among the most valuable and reputable brands in the world across various global brand surveys. Lego's combination of its nearly 70-year-unchanged interlocking brick design and its expansion into a globally dominant licensed and original entertainment property empire has made it one of the most commercially and culturally significant toy companies in history.
VS
Fisher-Price
Fisher-Price was founded in 1930 in East Aurora, New York by Herman Fisher, Irving Price, and Helen Schelle, building its early identity specifically around durable, simple wooden pull toys designed for very young children, a deliberately different market segment than toy companies focused on older kids. The company became particularly known for its extensive line of infant and toddler developmental toys, including its classic Chatter Telephone and Little People figures, positioning Fisher-Price as one of the most trusted brands specifically for the earliest years of childhood play. Fisher-Price was acquired by Mattel in 1993, becoming a distinct subsidiary brand within Mattel's broader portfolio, and Fisher-Price has continued operating with its own dedicated focus on infant and preschool-age products even as it draws on parent company Mattel's larger manufacturing and distribution resources. Fisher-Price's combination of its foundational focus on the youngest children's developmental toys and its enduring brand trust across nearly a century has made it one of the most consistently respected toy brands in early childhood development.
