Leonardo.Ai
Leonardo.Ai launched in 2022, founded in Sydney, Australia, and built its early reputation specifically around video game asset generation — character concept art, textures, and environment art — a more specialized use case than the general-purpose creative image generation most competing tools targeted from the outset. The platform's fine-tuned custom model marketplace lets users train and share specialized models built for specific visual styles or subject matter, a feature that's drawn a substantial community of game developers and concept artists specifically looking for consistent, on-brand asset generation rather than one-off standalone images. Adobe acquired Leonardo.Ai in 2024, folding the Australian startup's technology and team into Adobe's broader generative-AI product strategy alongside Firefly, a consolidation that reflected the broader wave of acquisitions among AI image-generation startups as larger technology companies moved to acquire specialized capability rather than build every feature in-house. Leonardo.Ai's combination of its original game-development asset focus and its subsequent acquisition by Adobe has made it one of the more specifically production-oriented AI image generators, built from the outset around consistent, reusable visual assets rather than purely one-off creative images.
VS
Ideogram
Ideogram launched in 2023, founded by former Google Brain researchers who worked previously on Google's own image-generation research, and it built its early reputation around a specific technical problem most competing image generators struggled badly with — rendering legible, correctly spelled text directly within generated images. That text-rendering capability made Ideogram a particularly popular choice for generating logos, posters, memes, and other designs requiring readable words as part of the image itself, a use case where rivals like Midjourney had historically produced garbled, nonsensical lettering even when every other part of an image looked polished. The company is based in Toronto, giving it a notable Canadian presence in a text-to-image field otherwise dominated almost entirely by US-based companies, and it's continued to compete directly against much larger, better-funded rivals specifically by staying focused on the legible-text niche its founders identified early. Ideogram's combination of solving the text-rendering problem before most larger competitors and its continued focus on that specific use case has made it the AI image generator most frequently recommended specifically for design work requiring readable words within the image itself.
