Lethal Weapon
Lethal Weapon, released in 1987, paired Mel Gibson's reckless, suicidal detective with Danny Glover's cautious, family-oriented partner, establishing much of the mismatched-personality-pairing template that defined the buddy cop genre's commercial peak throughout the following decade. Glover's repeated exasperated line "I'm too old for this," delivered throughout the franchise's sequels in response to increasingly dangerous situations, became one of the most widely quoted and imitated catchphrases in action-comedy film history. The film's blend of genuinely intense action sequences with buddy-comedy banter between its two mismatched leads established a commercial and tonal template that Hollywood continued replicating across numerous subsequent buddy cop films throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. Lethal Weapon's massive commercial success launched a four-film franchise and helped cement director Richard Donner and screenwriter Shane Black as significant figures in shaping the action-comedy genre's commercial template for the following decade.
VS
Rush Hour
Rush Hour, released in 1998, paired Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan with American comedian Chris Tucker, and the film's combination of Chan's precisely choreographed physical comedy and martial arts with Tucker's rapid-fire comedic energy created a genuinely distinctive cross-cultural buddy cop dynamic. The film's success significantly helped establish Jackie Chan as a mainstream American film star, following years of him being primarily known to American audiences only through imported and often poorly dubbed Hong Kong action films. Its blend of genuinely impressive practical martial arts stunt choreography, performed largely by Chan himself without stunt doubles in his signature style, with more conventional American buddy cop comedy banter gave Rush Hour a distinctive East-meets-West genre fusion. Rush Hour's massive commercial success launched a trilogy of sequels and helped establish a broader trend of pairing Hong Kong martial arts stars with American comedic actors in buddy action-comedy films throughout the following decade.
