Limp Bizkit
Limp Bizkit's 1999 album Significant Other and 2000 follow-up Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water both debuted at or near the top of the Billboard 200, reflecting the band's massive commercial dominance during nu metal's absolute peak of mainstream popularity around the turn of the millennium. Frontman Fred Durst's brash, confrontational public persona and the band's combination of rap-influenced vocal delivery with heavy guitar riffs made Limp Bizkit one of the most commercially recognizable acts of the genre, even as they drew significant critical skepticism throughout their career. The band's headlining performance at the chaotic 1999 Woodstock '99 festival, during which their set was later cited amid broader discussions of crowd violence and property destruction at the event, became a significant and controversial part of the band's broader public history. Limp Bizkit's combination of massive early commercial dominance and their significant, if polarizing, role in nu metal's mainstream popularization has made them one of the genre's most commercially significant, if critically contested, acts.
VS
Slipknot
Slipknot's nine members, each performing in matching jumpsuits and individually designed masks while assigned numbers rather than emphasized individual names, gave the band one of the most visually distinctive and theatrically elaborate stage presentations in nu metal and heavy metal more broadly. Their combination of extreme aggression, incorporating additional percussionists and turntable elements alongside conventional metal instrumentation, gave Slipknot a uniquely dense, chaotic sonic identity that distinguished them from more straightforwardly commercial nu metal contemporaries. The band's masked anonymity, maintained consistently across their career even as individual members' identities eventually became publicly known, reflected a deliberate artistic choice to prioritize the collective Slipknot identity over individual member celebrity. Their combination of genuinely extreme sonic aggression and their elaborate, theatrically distinctive visual presentation has made Slipknot one of the most commercially successful and visually iconic bands to emerge from nu metal's more extreme, less radio-friendly wing.
