Lollapalooza
Lollapalooza was founded in 1991 by Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell, originally conceived as a farewell touring festival for his band, and it toured to a different city each year through the 1990s before going on hiatus and later relaunching in 2005 as a fixed annual event in Chicago's Grant Park. The original touring festival played a major role in bringing alternative rock, industrial, and hip-hop acts to mainstream American audiences during the early-to-mid 1990s, helping define the era's alternative music culture at a national scale. Since its 2005 relaunch, Lollapalooza has expanded internationally, with sister festivals licensed and organized in countries including Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and France, turning a single American festival brand into a genuinely global franchise. Lollapalooza's combination of its origins as Perry Farrell's alternative-rock farewell tour and its later transformation into a global multi-country festival franchise has made it one of the most influential music festivals ever created.
VS
South by Southwest (SXSW)
South by Southwest launched in 1987 in Austin, Texas, originally conceived purely as a music industry showcase and conference before expanding significantly over the following decade to add major film and interactive/technology tracks running alongside the original music programming. SXSW's interactive technology track became particularly historically significant as an early launch platform for major technology products, most famously Twitter, which saw a dramatic surge in usage after being prominently showcased at the 2007 SXSW Interactive festival. Unlike a traditional single-stage or single-venue music festival, SXSW spans dozens of official and unofficial venues across downtown Austin simultaneously, combining formal conference programming with a sprawling, decentralized network of concurrent showcases, panels, and film screenings. South by Southwest's combination of its unusual three-track structure spanning music, film, and technology and its historical role launching Twitter to mainstream attention has made it one of the most distinctive major festivals in the country.
