Loretta Lynn
Loretta Lynn's autobiographical songwriting, drawing directly on her own upbringing in rural Kentucky coal country and her experience marrying at 15, brought an unusually frank, working-class female perspective to country music at a time when the genre's biggest stars were still overwhelmingly male. Her 1975 song "The Pill," which openly discussed birth control from a woman's perspective, was banned by numerous country radio stations for its explicit subject matter, and Lynn's willingness to write directly about topics like domestic abuse, double standards in marriage, and women's autonomy made her one of the genre's most quietly radical songwriters. Lynn's 1976 memoir Coal Miner's Daughter was adapted into a 1980 biographical film of the same name starring Sissy Spacek, whose performance won the Academy Award for Best Actress, and the film brought Lynn's life story and music to a significantly wider mainstream American audience. Her decades-long career, which continued producing new, critically acclaimed material well into her eighties, including a 2004 collaboration with producer Jack White, gave Lynn a level of late-career artistic relevance and reinvention that few country artists of her original era achieved.
VS
Garth Brooks
Garth Brooks is the best-selling solo artist in US history by certified album sales, according to the RIAA, a distinction reflecting the unprecedented commercial scale country music achieved during his 1990s peak, when his albums regularly outsold every other genre of American popular music. Brooks brought arena-rock-style stage production to country music concerts — pyrotechnics, wireless headset microphones allowing him to run and climb across elaborate stage sets, and stadium-scale lighting — a theatrical approach that expanded what a country concert could look and feel like, closer to a rock spectacle than the more static performances typical of earlier country stars. His songs blended traditional country themes with a broader pop and rock sensibility, and hits like "Friends in Low Places" and "The Dance" crossed over into mainstream pop culture recognition well beyond country radio's traditional audience, helping drive country music's broader commercial explosion during the 1990s. Brooks's decision to voluntarily step away from major touring and recording for several years during the early 2000s to focus on raising his daughters, followed by a highly successful return to full-scale stadium touring in the 2010s, reflected a level of career control and family-first decision-making unusual for an artist of his commercial stature.
