Los Tacos No. 1
Los Tacos No. 1 opened in May 2013 as a stand inside Chelsea Market, founded by Christian Pineda, a Tijuana native, along with Tyler Sanders and Kyle Cameron, both from Brawley, California, a town near the Mexican border. Pineda had moved to New York and found the city's taco options genuinely lacking compared to what he'd grown up with, and built the stand specifically to close that gap rather than to chase a trend. The format stayed deliberately narrow from day one — no dining room, no expansive menu, just a small handful of tacos built around a proper vertical trompo for al pastor and carefully sourced corn tortillas, made fresh rather than treated as an afterthought. That narrowness is a large part of why the line moves fast even when it's long, and why the quality has stayed consistent as the stand became one of the most talked-about food stalls in the entire market. Chelsea Market itself is a genuinely crowded field of well-regarded vendors, and Los Tacos No. 1 has held its position as one of the most consistently recommended stops in the building for over a decade, a rare thing in a food hall where novelty usually fades fast. The corn tortillas, made in-house, are as much a signature as the meat on top of them. For a national tacos list, Los Tacos No. 1 is the essential "the trompo done right in a food hall" entry — an authentic vertical al pastor spit and in-house corn tortillas, built by a Tijuana native who found New York's taco scene lacking and simply fixed it himself.
VS
El Farolito
El Farolito has run a 24-hour taqueria at the corner of Mission and 24th Street for decades, owned by Salvador Lopez and grown into a small Bay Area chain of roughly a dozen locations while keeping the original Mission storefront as the one most identified with the name. It's a cash-only counter — an ATM sits inside for anyone who forgets — that's stayed genuinely unpretentious even as its reputation has spread well past the neighborhood. The super burrito is the item most associated with the taqueria — a genuinely oversized, forearm-length burrito stuffed with meat, beans, and cheese — but the tacos built on small corn tortillas get just as much loyalty from regulars who prefer them to the more famous burrito. El Farolito's salsa bar has its own following, with a lighter, herb-forward green salsa built specifically to cut through the richness of the taqueria's slow-cooked meats. Being open around the clock has shaped the taqueria's identity as much as any single menu item: El Farolito is as much a late-night institution for people leaving Mission District bars as it is a lunch spot, a role few other taquerias on this list are built to fill given more conventional hours. For a national tacos list, El Farolito is the essential "24-hour Mission institution" entry — corn tortilla tacos and forearm-length burritos served around the clock from a taqueria whose name extends well beyond its own counter.
