Louis Armstrong
Louis Armstrong's recordings with his Hot Five and Hot Seven ensembles in the late 1920s are widely credited with establishing the improvised solo as the central creative element of jazz, shifting the genre's focus away from collective group playing toward the kind of individual virtuoso improvisation that's remained central to jazz ever since. His innovative "scat singing" — improvising wordless vocal melodies using nonsense syllables in place of lyrics — became one of jazz vocal performance's defining techniques, and Armstrong's own gravelly, instantly recognizable voice made him as significant a vocalist as he was a trumpet player. Armstrong's 1964 single "Hello, Dolly!" knocked the Beatles off the top of the Billboard Hot 100 during the peak of Beatlemania, making the 62-year-old Armstrong the oldest artist ever to have a number-one single at the time, a late-career commercial triumph decades after his most influential recordings. His warm, crowd-pleasing stage persona and willingness to cross over into mainstream popular entertainment drew some criticism from later jazz purists who felt he'd become too commercially accommodating, but Armstrong's technical innovations on trumpet and his foundational role in establishing improvisation as jazz's defining feature remain undisputed among jazz historians.
VS
Ella Fitzgerald
Ella Fitzgerald, nicknamed "the First Lady of Song," won 13 Grammy Awards across her career and is widely regarded as the greatest jazz vocalist in the genre's history, known for a pure, technically precise tone and remarkable vocal range that let her match the harmonic complexity of the instrumentalists she performed alongside. Her mastery of scat singing, improvising complex wordless vocal lines with the same technical fluency as a jazz horn player, set the standard other jazz vocalists have been measured against since, and her ability to improvise scat solos of comparable complexity to top instrumentalists distinguished her from vocalists who primarily interpreted written melodies. Fitzgerald's "Songbook" series of albums throughout the 1950s and '60s, each dedicated to the compositions of a single major American songwriter like Cole Porter or George Gershwin, helped establish the American popular song canon now commonly referred to as the "Great American Songbook." Fitzgerald broke significant racial barriers throughout her career, including a notable 1955 booking at the segregated Mocambo nightclub in Los Angeles, reportedly secured after Marilyn Monroe personally lobbied the club's owner to book her — a moment frequently cited as an example of how her talent helped open doors within an industry still deeply shaped by segregation.
