Louisiana State University
Louisiana State University, founded in 1860, is the state's flagship public research university, and its LSU Tigers football program, playing home games in front of some of the loudest and most passionate crowds in college football at Tiger Stadium, has made the university one of the most recognizable athletic brands in the sport. The university's petroleum engineering and coastal and environmental science programs draw directly on Louisiana's significant oil and gas industry and its extensive coastal wetlands, giving LSU particular research strength in fields tied closely to the state's specific economic and geographic circumstances. LSU's veterinary medicine and law school have each built solid regional reputations, and the university's research into coastal erosion and hurricane resilience has become increasingly significant given Louisiana's ongoing and severe coastal land loss, one of the most serious environmental challenges facing any US state. The university's combination of major-program football tradition, its research strength in fields directly tied to Louisiana's oil and gas economy and coastal geography, and its role as the state's clear public flagship have made LSU central to both Louisiana's higher education system and its broader cultural identity.
VS
Tulane University
Tulane University, founded in 1834, is the leading private research university in the Deep South, and its uptown New Orleans campus, along with its architecturally distinctive Gibson Hall, gives the university a genuine connection to one of the most culturally distinctive cities in the country. The university's public health school, one of the oldest and most respected in the country, and its business school have each built strong national reputations, and Tulane's tropical medicine program reflects the school's historical strength in public health research tied to New Orleans's specific climate and geography. Tulane's application volume and academic selectivity rose dramatically in the years following Hurricane Katrina's 2005 devastation of New Orleans, as the university's post-storm rebuilding effort, including a newly mandated public service graduation requirement, drew significant renewed national attention and applicant interest. The university's combination of genuine research-university strength in public health and business, alongside its deep integration into New Orleans's distinctive culture and its post-Katrina institutional renewal, has made Tulane one of the more notable examples of a university's academic profile rising substantially in the aftermath of a genuine institutional crisis.
