Loyola University New Orleans
Loyola University New Orleans, founded in 1904 by the Jesuit order, has built strong programs in music and mass communication, drawing directly on New Orleans's globally significant musical heritage, and the university's College of Music and Fine Arts offers one of relatively few standalone jazz studies degree programs in the country. The university's law school and its business school have each built solid regional reputations within the broader New Orleans legal and business community, and Loyola's Jesuit mission emphasizes service and ethical formation alongside its professional and liberal arts academic offerings. Loyola's uptown New Orleans campus sits directly adjacent to Tulane University, and the two schools share some academic and social resources despite being entirely separate institutions, giving Loyola students access to a broader combined university community than the school's own enrollment alone would suggest. The university's specific strength in music, particularly jazz studies, reflecting its New Orleans location, combined with its Jesuit mission and law school, has made Loyola New Orleans a distinctive choice among the city's private universities, particularly for students interested in New Orleans's unique musical culture.
VS
Xavier University of Louisiana
Xavier University of Louisiana, founded in 1925, is the only historically Black Catholic university in the United States, and its pre-medical program sends more Black students on to medical school than any other undergraduate institution in the country, a distinction the university has held consistently for years. The university's pharmacy program is similarly one of the most productive sources of Black pharmacists in the country, and Xavier's combination of rigorous science preparation and its specific institutional mission serving Black Catholic students has made it one of the most academically significant HBCUs in the country for pre-health career preparation. Xavier's campus suffered significant damage during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and the university's successful, relatively rapid rebuilding and reopening became an important part of the broader story of New Orleans's post-Katrina institutional recovery across the city's higher education sector. The university's combination of its unique status as the country's only historically Black Catholic university and its nationally leading pre-med and pharmacy placement outcomes has made Xavier one of the most academically significant and distinctive HBCUs in the country.
