Ludwig van Beethoven
Ludwig van Beethoven began losing his hearing in his late twenties, a progressive condition that left him almost completely deaf by the final decade of his life, yet he continued composing some of his most significant and structurally ambitious works, including his Ninth Symphony, during the period when his hearing loss was most severe. His nine symphonies fundamentally expanded the scale and emotional scope of what a symphony could be, moving the form away from the more restrained, formally balanced compositions of the earlier Classical era toward the more personally expressive, dramatically ambitious Romantic style that would come to dominate 19th-century composition. Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, completed in 1824 after he'd become almost entirely deaf, incorporated a full choral finale setting Friedrich Schiller's "Ode to Joy" to music, an unprecedented structural choice for a symphony at the time that's since become one of the most widely recognized and performed pieces of music in the world. His bridging role between the Classical era of Mozart and Haydn and the emerging Romantic era that followed makes Beethoven the composer most frequently cited as the pivotal transitional figure in Western classical music's stylistic evolution, and his combination of technical innovation and deeply personal emotional expression, achieved while managing profound hearing loss, has made his life story as celebrated as his compositions themselves.
VS
Johann Sebastian Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach composed more than 1,000 surviving works across nearly every major genre of his era — cantatas, orchestral suites, keyboard works, and sacred choral music — during a career spent largely working as a church musician in Germany rather than as a celebrated international touring virtuoso during his own lifetime. His mastery of counterpoint, the technique of combining multiple independent melodic lines into a unified harmonic whole, reached its most famous expression in works like The Well-Tempered Clavier and The Art of Fugue, compositions still used today as foundational texts for teaching advanced music theory and composition. Bach's reputation was relatively modest outside professional musical circles during his own lifetime, and it wasn't until composer Felix Mendelssohn's celebrated 1829 revival performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion, nearly 80 years after Bach's death, that his broader posthumous reputation as one of history's greatest composers began to solidify. His combined body of sacred and secular work, technical rigor, and continued influence on virtually every subsequent generation of Western composers has made Bach a foundational reference point that composers across radically different later eras and styles have continued to study and draw from.
