Lululemon
Lululemon was founded in Vancouver in 1998 by Chip Wilson, who identified an underserved market for technical athletic apparel specifically designed for yoga, at a time when yoga was rapidly growing in mainstream popularity but had few dedicated apparel options. The company's premium-priced yoga pants and leggings, built around proprietary fabric technology, became closely associated with a broader "athleisure" trend, as activewear increasingly became acceptable everyday clothing well beyond the gym or yoga studio itself. Lululemon's store staff, referred to as "educators" rather than typical retail sales associates, and its community-building strategy of hosting free in-store yoga classes reflected a deliberate brand positioning around wellness community rather than purely transactional retail. Lululemon's combination of its foundational role in the athleisure clothing trend and its distinctive wellness-community-focused retail strategy has made it one of the most culturally influential athletic apparel brands of the 2010s.
VS
Adidas
Adidas was founded in Germany in 1949 by Adolf "Adi" Dassler, following a bitter split with his brother Rudolf, who went on to found rival sportswear company Puma in the very same small town, creating a decades-long sibling rivalry that split the local community. The company's shoes were famously worn by Jesse Owens at the 1936 Berlin Olympics (before the Adidas brand name officially existed, under Dassler's earlier shoe company) and later by numerous Olympic athletes, establishing an early association with elite athletic performance that shaped the brand's identity for decades. Adidas's distinctive three-stripe logo became one of the most recognized brand marks in sports apparel, and the company's later expansion into hip-hop and streetwear culture, notably through its partnership with Run-D.M.C. in the 1980s, demonstrated an early and influential crossover between athletic brands and mainstream youth culture. Adidas's combination of its origins in a historic sibling rivalry with Puma and its pioneering crossover into hip-hop culture has made it one of the most globally significant athletic apparel brands in the industry.
