Lynyrd Skynyrd
Lynyrd Skynyrd's 1974 song "Sweet Home Alabama," written partly as a musical response to Neil Young's critical songs about the American South, became one of the most enduringly popular Southern rock anthems and a defining expression of regional Southern pride in American popular music. Their extended three-guitar lineup, an unusually large guitar section for a rock band of their era, gave Lynyrd Skynyrd's sound a layered, harmonized intensity that became a defining stylistic feature of Southern rock as a broader genre. A devastating 1977 plane crash killed lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and several others associated with the band just days after the release of their album Street Survivors, a tragedy that abruptly ended the band's original lineup at the height of their commercial success. Their combination of "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird," two of the most recognizable Southern rock anthems ever recorded, alongside the band's tragic history, has made Lynyrd Skynyrd the act most closely identified with the entire Southern rock genre.
VS
Molly Hatchet
Molly Hatchet, formed in Jacksonville, Florida in the mid-1970s, built their sound around a heavier, more aggressive guitar attack than some of their Southern rock contemporaries, giving the band a sound that bridged Southern rock with the harder-edged rock and early metal sensibilities emerging during that era. Their 1979 song "Flirtin' with Disaster" became one of the band's most enduringly popular tracks, and its combination of driving guitar work and Danny Joe Brown's powerful vocal delivery established Molly Hatchet as one of the more commercially successful second-wave Southern rock bands. The band's striking album cover artwork, frequently featuring fantasy and mythological imagery from artist Frank Frazetta, gave Molly Hatchet a distinctive visual identity that set them apart from Southern rock's more typically understated album art conventions. Their combination of a heavier guitar sound within the Southern rock tradition and their distinctive fantasy-influenced visual branding has made Molly Hatchet one of the more musically and visually distinctive bands within the genre's broader history.
