Maggie Steffens
Maggie Steffens won Olympic gold with the United States women's water polo team at three consecutive Olympics, from 2012 to 2020, and led the team in scoring at multiple Games, establishing herself as the most dominant individual player in the history of American women's water polo. Her performance at the 2012 London Olympics, scoring 21 goals as a teenager to lead the entire tournament in scoring during Team USA's first-ever Olympic gold medal in the sport, immediately established Steffens as one of the most significant young talents in the sport's history. Steffens's continued leadership across three consecutive Olympic gold medal runs, serving as team captain during the later stages of her career, reflected a level of sustained individual and team success that established the United States as the dominant program in women's water polo throughout the 2010s. Her combination of prolific individual scoring and her central leadership role across Team USA's unprecedented three-Olympics gold medal streak has made Steffens the individual most frequently cited as the greatest women's water polo player in the sport's history.
VS
Maureen O'Toole
Maureen O'Toole competed for the United States women's water polo team across an unusually long international career, including winning silver at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the first Olympics at which women's water polo was included as a medal sport, at 39 years old. Her participation in that historic first women's Olympic water polo tournament, achieved after decades of playing the sport when it offered no Olympic pathway at all for women, made O'Toole a foundational figure in the sport's fight for Olympic inclusion and broader recognition of women's water polo internationally. O'Toole's advocacy work throughout the 1980s and '90s, pushing for women's water polo's eventual addition to the Olympic program, reflected years of effort well before her own eventual Olympic silver medal, making her individual playing achievement inseparable from her broader institutional advocacy for the sport. Her combination of sustained playing excellence across multiple decades and her direct advocacy role in securing women's water polo's Olympic inclusion has made O'Toole one of the most historically significant figures in the sport's development, both as a competitor and as an institutional advocate.
