Maker's Mark
Maker's Mark was founded in 1953 by Bill Samuels Sr., who reportedly burned his family's generations-old bourbon recipe and started over from scratch, developing a distinctive wheated bourbon mash bill using winter wheat instead of the rye typically used by most other bourbon producers, aiming for a softer, less spicy flavor profile. The brand's signature red wax-dipped bottle seal, hand-dipped at the distillery since the brand's founding, became one of the most recognizable packaging designs in the entire spirits industry and was successfully trademarked as a distinctive brand element, an unusual legal protection for a bottle's physical appearance. Maker's Mark's founder is credited with popularizing the term "handmade" bourbon marketing more broadly across the industry, emphasizing small-batch production values at a time when many competing bourbon brands emphasized scale and consistency over craft positioning. Maker's Mark's combination of its distinctive wheated bourbon recipe and its trademarked hand-dipped red wax seal has made it one of the most visually and stylistically distinctive bourbon brands in the industry.
VS
Buffalo Trace
Buffalo Trace Distillery operates on a site with distilling history dating back to the late 18th century, and the distillery survived Prohibition as one of a small number of distilleries granted a license to continue producing whiskey for medicinal purposes during that period. The distillery has been designated a National Historic Landmark, reflecting both its architectural significance and its continuous, uninterrupted operating history spanning more than two centuries under multiple different ownership names before adopting the Buffalo Trace name in 1999. Buffalo Trace built a significant reputation within the bourbon enthusiast community for its highly allocated, limited-release Antique Collection bottlings, including Pappy Van Winkle and George T. Stagg, which have become some of the most sought-after and highest-resale-value bourbons in the entire American whiskey market. Buffalo Trace's combination of its National Historic Landmark distillery status and its highly sought-after limited-release Antique Collection has made it one of the most critically respected bourbon producers in the modern American whiskey industry.
