Man on Wire
Man on Wire, released in 2008, documented French high-wire artist Philippe Petit's illegal 1974 tightrope walk between the twin towers of the World Trade Center, reconstructing the elaborate, meticulously planned heist-like operation required to secretly rig a wire nearly 1,400 feet above the streets of Lower Manhattan. The film's structure, blending archival footage, dramatic recreations, and present-day interviews with Petit and his collaborators, built genuine suspense around an event whose outcome — Petit's ultimately successful walk — audiences already generally knew going in, a structural achievement widely praised by documentary filmmaking critics. Petit's walk, performed without any legal permission and requiring his team to sneak equipment into the still-unfinished towers over multiple nights, has become one of the most celebrated acts of guerrilla performance art in modern history, and the film's account of the operation's planning is frequently compared to a heist film's structure. Man on Wire won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, and the film's poignant, unstated resonance with the September 11 attacks that had later destroyed the same towers gave the story an additional layer of emotional weight that the filmmakers deliberately chose not to directly address on screen.
VS
The Act of Killing
The Act of Killing, released in 2012, took an unusual and controversial documentary approach, inviting perpetrators of Indonesia's mid-1960s anti-communist mass killings to reenact their own real-life killings in the style of their favorite Hollywood film genres, a structural choice intended to expose the killers' own self-mythologizing about their crimes. The film's subjects, several of whom remained free and even celebrated figures within Indonesian society decades after committing mass killings, spoke with an unsettling casualness about their crimes throughout the film, giving Western audiences a rare direct window into perpetrators' own psychological rationalization of historical atrocity. Director Joshua Oppenheimer's methodology drew significant ethical debate within documentary filmmaking circles, given the film's decision to let its subjects theatrically reenact murders rather than pursuing more conventional journalistic investigation or survivor-centered storytelling. The film's international acclaim and Academy Award nomination helped draw significant renewed global attention to Indonesia's historical mass killings, a subject that had received relatively little international media or documentary attention in the decades since the killings actually occurred, and the film is credited with contributing to subsequent domestic Indonesian conversations about that historical period.
