MAPPA
MAPPA was founded in 2011 by producer Masao Maruyama after he departed Madhouse, the studio he had previously helped lead, and MAPPA's name is an acronym for "Maruyama Animation Produce Project Association," directly reflecting its founder's central role establishing the studio. MAPPA grew rapidly into one of the most prominent anime studios of the late 2010s and 2020s, producing high-profile series including "Attack on Titan's" later seasons, "Jujutsu Kaisen," and "Chainsaw Man," each of which became major internationally successful franchises during MAPPA's production. The studio drew significant industry attention and some controversy over reported demanding production schedules and working conditions during its rapid growth period, a broader issue affecting much of the anime production industry that MAPPA's high-profile projects brought increased public scrutiny toward. MAPPA's combination of its founder's direct lineage from Madhouse and its rapid rise producing some of the 2020s' most internationally successful anime franchises has made it one of the most commercially significant contemporary anime studios in the industry.
VS
Madhouse
Madhouse was founded in 1972 by a group of animators who had previously worked at Mushi Production, the studio founded by "godfather of anime" Osamu Tezuka, giving Madhouse a direct professional lineage tracing back to some of anime's earliest formative production houses. The studio built a reputation for producing critically acclaimed, artistically ambitious anime films and series across a wide range of genres and visual styles, including Satoshi Kon's "Perfect Blue" and "Paprika," which became internationally significant for their psychologically complex, visually inventive storytelling. Madhouse has also produced numerous long-running and internationally popular television series, including "Death Note" and "One-Punch Man," demonstrating the studio's ability to balance both prestige theatrical film projects and commercially successful ongoing television productions. Madhouse's combination of its direct lineage from Osamu Tezuka's foundational Mushi Production and its sustained critical acclaim across both film and television has made it one of the most artistically respected anime studios in the industry.
