Mariel Zagunis
Mariel Zagunis won Olympic gold in saber fencing at both the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Games, becoming the first American fencer to win an individual Olympic gold medal in 100 years when she claimed the 2004 title, a drought that reflected just how rarely American fencers had previously reached the top of Olympic competition. Her 2004 gold came as a genuine surprise, as Zagunis wasn't initially expected to make the US Olympic team at all and only qualified after another fencer's positive doping test opened a spot on the roster — a fortunate opportunity she then converted into an unexpected gold medal. Zagunis competed at four consecutive Olympics between 2004 and 2016, and her sustained presence at the top of American saber fencing helped raise the sport's domestic visibility in the United States at a time when fencing otherwise received minimal mainstream American sports media coverage. Her back-to-back individual Olympic golds established Zagunis as the most successful American fencer in modern Olympic history, and her career helped inspire a subsequent generation of American fencers to pursue the sport more seriously as a genuine Olympic medal opportunity rather than a niche pursuit.
VS
Edoardo Mangiarotti
Edoardo Mangiarotti won 13 Olympic medals across foil and épée competition spanning five Olympics from 1936 to 1960, a combined total that stood as the record for most Olympic fencing medals by any competitor for more than five decades, until Valentina Vezzali's later career began approaching his statistical dominance. His career, interrupted for six years by World War II, spanned an unusually long competitive window even accounting for the wartime gap, and Mangiarotti's ambidextrous ability to compete effectively left-handed despite being naturally right-handed gave him a tactical advantage that opponents found difficult to prepare for. Mangiarotti won gold medals in both individual and team events across his career, reflecting an all-around excellence in épée specifically that made him one of the most complete fencers of his generation, competing at the top level across multiple decades of significant changes in equipment, scoring technology, and competitive format. His combined medal total and the sheer length of his competitive career — spanning the pre-war, wartime-interrupted, and post-war eras of Olympic competition — make Mangiarotti one of the most statistically significant fencers in Olympic history, and Italian fencing's continued strength through the mid-20th century owed substantially to his sustained individual dominance.
