Marietta, GA
Marietta's historic town square, Glover Park, has anchored the city's downtown since before the Civil War, and much of the surrounding commercial and residential architecture survived the broader destruction of the Atlanta campaign in 1864, giving Marietta one of the better-preserved concentrations of antebellum and Reconstruction-era buildings in the immediate Atlanta area. The Marietta National Cemetery, established in 1866, is the final resting place for more than 10,000 Union soldiers who died during the Atlanta campaign, and it sits alongside the nearby Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, giving the city a genuine concentration of Civil War historical sites within its immediate vicinity. The "Big Chicken," a roughly 56-foot-tall chicken-shaped building constructed in 1963 to house a fried chicken restaurant, has become one of the most recognizable and affectionately regarded local landmarks in the entire Atlanta area, reportedly used for decades by NASA as a navigational reference point for astronauts flying into nearby Dobbins Air Reserve Base. Marietta's combination of a well-preserved historic town square, significant Civil War-era sites, and its genuinely beloved oversized-chicken roadside landmark has made it one of the more distinctive and historically layered suburbs anywhere in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area.
VS
Alpharetta, GA
Alpharetta sits in north Fulton County roughly 25 miles from downtown Atlanta, and it's built a substantial enough concentration of technology and financial-services company offices over the past two decades that local boosters and regional media have taken to calling it "the Technology City of the South," anchoring a broader corridor of corporate campuses along Georgia 400. Avalon, a large mixed-use development that opened in 2014 on the site of a former shopping mall, combines upscale retail, restaurants, apartments, and office space in a deliberately walkable outdoor format, and it's become one of the most visited commercial destinations in the entire north Atlanta suburban area since opening. The city's downtown historic district has retained a small-town commercial core even as the surrounding area has grown rapidly, giving Alpharetta a contrast between its dense, modern corporate and retail corridor along Georgia 400 and a more traditional, walkable old town center just a short distance away. Alpharetta's combination of a genuine technology-sector corporate cluster, the large-scale Avalon mixed-use development, and a preserved historic downtown has made it one of the fastest-growing and most economically significant suburbs anywhere in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area.
