Mario
Mario, created by Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto, first appeared as "Jumpman" in the 1981 arcade game "Donkey Kong" before becoming the star of his own franchise beginning with 1985's "Super Mario Bros.," and he has since become the best-selling video game franchise character in history. The Mario franchise spans platformers, kart racers, sports games, and party games across dozens of individual titles, and its willingness to experiment with genre while keeping the core character and Mushroom Kingdom setting consistent let Nintendo build one of the most commercially durable properties in entertainment history. Mario's cross-media reach, including the record-breaking 2023 animated "Super Mario Bros. Movie" and decades of merchandising, theme park attractions, and cultural references, extended the character's recognition well beyond people who have ever actually played a Mario video game. Mario's combination of its unmatched sales record as gaming's best-selling franchise and its successful expansion across genres and media formats has made it the most commercially significant video game franchise in the industry's history.
VS
Call of Duty
Call of Duty launched in 2003 as a World War II first-person shooter developed by Infinity Ward, before the franchise's pivotal shift to a modern military setting with 2007's "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" reshaped both the series and the broader first-person shooter genre's commercial direction. The franchise's annual release cycle, with a new mainline entry launching essentially every year for two decades, became a widely studied business model in the games industry, sustained by a rotating group of development studios working in parallel to maintain the yearly cadence. Call of Duty's multiplayer and later battle royale modes became a massive standalone cultural and commercial phenomenon, and the franchise has consistently ranked among the best-selling video game series of each year it releases a new entry, reflecting an unusually durable annual commercial demand. Call of Duty's combination of its industry-reshaping shift to modern military shooters and its historically significant sustained annual release business model has made it one of the most commercially dominant video game franchises in the industry.
