Mark Roth
Mark Roth won 34 career PBA Tour titles and is widely credited with revolutionizing bowling technique through his powerful, high-revolution "power stroke" delivery, a style that generated significantly more ball hook and pin action than the smoother, more controlled deliveries common among his contemporaries. His unconventional, self-taught technique was initially considered unorthodox by traditional bowling instructors, but Roth's sustained tour success throughout the late 1970s and 1980s proved the approach's effectiveness and directly influenced a generation of subsequent bowlers who adopted variations of his higher-revolution style. Roth was named PBA Player of the Year four times, and his combination of raw power and technical innovation made him one of the most influential stylistic figures in the sport's history, credited with helping usher bowling technique away from its more traditionally conservative delivery approach. His influence on subsequent bowling technique is comparable to a significant swing-change influence in golf, and Roth's power-based delivery style became the technical foundation that many of the sport's subsequent power players built their own games around in the decades following his prime.
VS
Kelly Kulick
Kelly Kulick became the first woman in history to win a PBA Tour title against a field of male competitors, claiming the 2010 PBA Tournament of Champions, a milestone widely regarded as one of the most significant breakthroughs for gender inclusion in professional bowling's history. Her victory came after Kulick had already established herself as one of the most dominant competitors on the separate women's professional bowling tour, and her decision to also compete directly against the men's tour's top players reflected a level of competitive ambition that few female bowlers had previously pursued at that level. Kulick's win prompted extensive media coverage well beyond bowling's usual audience, drawing comparisons to other historic moments of gender-barrier-breaking success in traditionally male-dominated professional sports, and her victory remains a frequently cited reference point in broader conversations about gender inclusion in professional bowling. Her combined success across both the women's tour and her historic co-ed PBA Tour title has made Kulick one of the most significant figures in the sport's modern history, and her 2010 breakthrough remains one of the most talked-about individual achievements in professional bowling of the past two decades.
