Marriott
Marriott traces its origins to 1927, when J. Willard Marriott and his wife Alice opened a root beer stand in Washington, D.C., which grew into a restaurant chain before the couple opened their first hotel, the Twin Bridges Motor Hotel, in 1957. The company grew substantially under J.W. Marriott Jr.'s leadership through both new construction and major acquisitions, and its 2016 acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts for $13.6 billion created the largest hotel company in the world by number of rooms, combining Marriott's brands with Starwood's portfolio including Westin and Sheraton. Marriott Bonvoy, the company's unified loyalty program formed by merging several previously separate rewards programs following the Starwood acquisition, became one of the largest hotel loyalty programs in the world by membership, spanning more than 30 distinct hotel brands under one corporate umbrella. Marriott's combination of its origins as a root beer stand and its landmark Starwood acquisition creating the world's largest hotel company has made it one of the most commercially significant hospitality companies in history.
VS
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG)
InterContinental Hotels Group traces its corporate lineage back to Bass Brewery, a British brewing company that entered the hotel business in the 1980s before eventually rebranding entirely around its hospitality operations and taking the IHG name in 2003. The company's flagship InterContinental brand traces to 1946, when Pan American World Airways founded the chain specifically to provide hotel accommodations for its airline passengers traveling to destinations lacking adequate existing lodging options. IHG operates one of the largest hotel franchise networks in the world by total room count, and its Holiday Inn brand, acquired as part of the company's portfolio, became one of the most recognized budget-to-midscale hotel brands in American road trip and highway travel culture throughout the mid-to-late 20th century. IHG's combination of its unusual origins as a British brewing company and its ownership of both the InterContinental luxury brand and the culturally significant Holiday Inn has made it one of the most structurally distinctive major hotel companies in the industry.
