Mars (M&M's/Snickers)
Mars, Incorporated was founded in 1911 by Frank C. Mars, who launched the Milky Way bar in 1923 before his son Forrest Mars developed both the Snickers bar in 1930 and, later, M&M's in 1941, building the company into one of the largest privately held candy manufacturers in the world. M&M's introduced its now-famous hard candy shell specifically to prevent the chocolate from melting in soldiers' hands during World War II, since the product was originally developed and marketed for military rations before becoming a mainstream civilian candy after the war ended. Snickers grew into the best-selling candy bar in the world by revenue, and Mars has remained privately owned by the Mars family for more than a century, an unusually sustained family ownership structure for a company operating at genuinely massive global commercial scale. Mars's combination of M&M's wartime-driven hard-shell innovation and Snickers's status as the world's best-selling candy bar has made it one of the most commercially dominant chocolate and candy companies in the world.
VS
Hershey's
Hershey's was founded by Milton S. Hershey, who established the Hershey Chocolate Company in 1894 as an offshoot of his existing caramel business, and he built an entire company town, Hershey, Pennsylvania, around the factory, complete with worker housing, schools, and amusement facilities. Hershey pioneered mass-production techniques that made milk chocolate significantly more affordable than the hand-crafted European chocolates that had previously dominated the premium chocolate market, effectively democratizing chocolate as an everyday, widely affordable treat for American consumers. Hershey's Kiss, introduced in 1907, became one of the most recognized individually wrapped chocolate products in American history, and Milton Hershey's decision to donate his entire personal fortune and company ownership stake to the Milton Hershey School, a school for orphaned and disadvantaged children, remains one of the most significant corporate philanthropic structures in American business history. Hershey's combination of its founder's mass-production affordability breakthrough and his extraordinary philanthropic ownership structure has made it one of the most historically and commercially significant chocolate brands in American history.
