Marvin Gaye
Marvin Gaye's 1971 album What's Going On marked a dramatic departure from the more straightforward romantic soul music that had defined his earlier Motown career, instead addressing the Vietnam War, urban poverty, and environmental degradation through a loosely connected concept album, and it's now widely regarded as one of the greatest albums in American music history. Motown founder Berry Gordy initially resisted releasing What's Going On, reportedly considering it too political and musically unconventional for commercial success, before its eventual release proved to be both a critical triumph and a major commercial hit, reshaping expectations for what a Motown artist's music could address. Gaye's smooth, sensual vocal style on later albums like Let's Get It On helped define the "quiet storm" subgenre of soul music, a deliberate contrast to the more socially conscious material of What's Going On that demonstrated his range across both deeply personal and broadly political songwriting. Gaye's life ended tragically in 1984, when he was shot and killed by his own father during a domestic dispute the day before his 45th birthday, a death that added a layer of tragedy to a catalog already known for its emotional depth and vulnerability across both his political and romantic material.
VS
Stevie Wonder
Stevie Wonder, blind since shortly after birth, signed to Motown Records at 11 and released his first number-one hit, "Fingertips, Pt. 2," at just 13, becoming one of the youngest artists ever to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart. His run of albums throughout the 1970s — Talking Book, Innervisions, Fulfillingness' First Finale, and Songs in the Key of Life — is widely regarded as one of the most sustained creative peaks in popular music history, and Wonder won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year three times during that decade alone. Wonder played most of the instruments on many of his own recordings himself, including keyboards, drums, and early synthesizers, and his pioneering use of the Moog synthesizer helped bring electronic instrumentation into mainstream soul and funk music years before it became standard across popular music generally. His advocacy helped establish Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a federal holiday, including a multi-year campaign built around his 1980 song "Happy Birthday," written specifically to build public support for the holiday, reflecting Wonder's sustained activism alongside his recording career.
