Massive Attack
Massive Attack helped originate trip-hop as a genre through their 1991 debut album "Blue Lines," combining hip-hop-influenced beats and sampling with a slower, more atmospheric and dub-influenced production style that became the foundational template for what critics began calling the "Bristol sound." Their 1998 album "Mezzanine" is widely regarded as one of the genre's essential recordings, incorporating darker, more industrial and post-punk-influenced textures that expanded trip-hop's sonic palette well beyond its more purely downtempo hip-hop origins. The collective's rotating cast of guest vocalists, including Horace Andy, Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins, and Tracey Thorn, gave their albums a distinctive multi-voiced identity that distinguished Massive Attack's approach from acts built around a single consistent lead vocalist. Their combination of "Blue Lines's" foundational role originating the genre and "Mezzanine's" continued genre-defining evolution has made Massive Attack almost universally regarded as the single most important act in trip-hop's history.
VS
DJ Shadow
DJ Shadow's 1996 debut album "Endtroducing....." became one of the most critically significant instrumental hip-hop and trip-hop-adjacent records ever released, built entirely from sampled material and widely recognized by Guinness World Records as the first album made exclusively from samples. His meticulous, crate-digging approach to sourcing and layering samples from obscure vinyl records gave "Endtroducing....." a dense, richly textured sound that helped establish sample-based, largely instrumental production as a legitimate standalone genre rather than purely a hip-hop production technique. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area rather than trip-hop's originating Bristol scene, DJ Shadow's American perspective on the genre's sample-heavy, downtempo aesthetic helped establish trip-hop and instrumental sample-based hip-hop as a genuinely international movement beyond its English origins. His combination of "Endtroducing....." unprecedented all-sample construction and its lasting influence on instrumental hip-hop production has made DJ Shadow one of the most technically influential figures across trip-hop and sample-based music broadly.
