Mathieu van der Poel
Mathieu van der Poel has won eight elite cyclocross World Championships — 2015, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026 — surpassing Sven Nys and Marianne Vos's respective records, while also winning both the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix in the same 2024 season, only the 13th rider ever to complete that "cobbled double." In 2023, he became the first rider in history to win both cyclocross and road racing's world championship, adding the road title in Glasgow — the first Dutch men's road world champion in nearly 40 years — to that year's Milano-Sanremo and Paris-Roubaix victories. His cycling lineage runs three generations deep: his father Adri van der Poel was also a professional cyclist, and his grandfather Raymond Poulidor remains one of French road racing's most beloved competitors, giving van der Poel a family connection to the sport's highest level across more than half a century. His combination of a record eight cyclocross world titles and his unprecedented cyclocross-and-road world championship double has made van der Poel one of the most statistically dominant cyclists across any discipline in the sport's history.
VS
Zdeněk Štybar
Zdeněk Štybar won three elite cyclocross World Championships — in 2010, 2011, and 2014 — after already claiming two U-23 world titles in 2005 and 2006, giving him five combined world championships across his cyclocross career before he transitioned to road racing. On the road, Štybar won three cobbled classics — the 2015 Strade Bianche, and both Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and the E3 BinckBank Classic in 2019 — but Paris-Roubaix specifically eluded him despite repeated close calls, including a 2013 near-miss after being held up by a spectator while leading, and runner-up finishes in 2015 and 2017. His technical bike-handling skill, developed through years of navigating cyclocross's mud and off-camber turns, translated directly into the precision required on Paris-Roubaix's cobblestone sectors, even though the race's biggest prize remained just out of reach across his career. His combination of five combined elite and U-23 cyclocross world titles and his subsequent podium-level road classics career has made Štybar one of the most complete cyclocross-to-road crossover riders of his generation.
