Matthews Beach Park
Matthews Beach Park, on Lake Washington's shore in northeast Seattle, offers one of the city's larger designated swimming areas along with extensive grassy fields, tennis courts, and playground facilities, giving it a broader everyday neighborhood park identity beyond just its beach. Its position considerably further from downtown than Madison Park or Denny Blaine has made it a particularly popular beach specifically for residents of Seattle's northern neighborhoods, offering the same warmer Lake Washington swimming water without the drive south to the city's more centrally located lake beaches. The park's direct connection to the Burke-Gilman Trail, a paved multi-use path running along much of Seattle's northern waterfront, makes Matthews Beach an easy stop for cyclists and joggers using the trail, adding a steady flow of passing recreational traffic beyond just beachgoers. For a Seattle beaches list, Matthews Beach Park is the essential "the north end's lake beach" entry — a large, family-oriented Lake Washington beach and park serving Seattle's northern neighborhoods, directly connected to the Burke-Gilman Trail.
VS
Alki Beach
Alki Beach, in West Seattle, marks the site where the Denny Party landed in 1851 to found the settlement that eventually became Seattle, making it the city's founding location as well as its most popular and developed beach today, complete with a long paved promenade for walking, cycling, and skating. Its wide, sandy shoreline and views across Elliott Bay toward the downtown skyline have earned it a local reputation as Seattle's closest thing to a Southern California-style beach scene, drawing sunbathers, volleyball players, and beachfront restaurant crowds throughout the summer despite Puget Sound's consistently cold water. A small replica of the Statue of Liberty, installed near the beach in 1952 by a local Boy Scout troop, has become one of Alki's specific landmarks, and the beach's Alki Point Lighthouse, still operating at the point's western tip, adds a working maritime landmark to the shoreline's mix of recreation and history. For a Seattle beaches list, Alki Beach is the essential "the city's founding beach" entry — a West Seattle shoreline marking Seattle's original 1851 settlement site, now the city's liveliest and most developed beach scene.
