Maui, Hawaii
Maui is the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands, and its combination of the Road to Hana — a roughly 64-mile winding coastal drive past waterfalls, black-sand beaches, and rainforest lookouts — with the volcanic summit of Haleakalā National Park gives visitors two dramatically different landscapes within the same island. The island's West Maui and South Maui coastlines are lined with resort towns like Lahaina and Wailea, built around calm, reef-protected beaches well suited to snorkeling, while Haleakalā's roughly 10,000-foot summit draws visitors well before dawn specifically to watch sunrise above the cloud line, a bucket-list experience Mark Twain once described as the most sublime spectacle he'd ever witnessed. Lahaina, the island's historic former whaling port and onetime capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, suffered a devastating wildfire in August 2023 that destroyed much of the town's historic core, and the island's tourism economy and residents have spent the years since navigating a genuinely difficult rebuilding process. Maui's combination of dramatic volcanic terrain, calm resort beaches, and a historic port town now rebuilding after tragedy has kept it one of the most consistently recommended Hawaiian Islands for travelers seeking both relaxation and genuine natural spectacle in a single trip.
VS
Napa Valley, California
Napa Valley's modern wine industry dates back to the 1960s and '70s, when a small group of winemakers began focusing seriously on producing world-class wine rather than the bulk, lower-quality production that had dominated the valley for decades prior, a shift that culminated in the valley's defining moment at the 1976 "Judgment of Paris." At that blind tasting, French judges ranked Napa Valley wines above prestigious French Bordeaux and Burgundy wines in both the red and white categories, a result that stunned the wine world and instantly established Napa as a serious global wine region rather than a regional curiosity, a moment now widely credited with launching California's broader modern wine industry. The valley now holds several hundred wineries within a roughly 30-mile stretch, ranging from small family operations to grand estate wineries built specifically as architectural and hospitality destinations, and the region has expanded well beyond wine tasting alone into a broader culinary tourism draw anchored by numerous Michelin-starred restaurants. Napa Valley's combination of its defining 1976 upset over French wine and its subsequent growth into a world-class wine and culinary destination has made it one of the most consistently recommended domestic vacation destinations for travelers specifically seeking wine, food, and scenic wine-country landscapes without international travel.
