Mazda MX-5 Miata
The Mazda MX-5 Miata launched in 1989, built around a deliberately simple engineering philosophy the Japanese development team called "jinba ittai" — horse and rider as one — a lightweight, front-engine, rear-wheel-drive roadster designed specifically to revive the spirit of small, affordable British and Italian sports cars of the 1960s that had largely disappeared from the market by the time the Miata arrived. Development lead Toshihiko Hirai and his team reportedly built and rejected multiple prototype layouts, including front-wheel-drive and mid-engine configurations, before committing to the classic front-engine, rear-drive format specifically because it best delivered the balanced, communicative handling feel the team was chasing — a decision that prioritized how the car felt to drive over almost any other engineering consideration. That focus on low weight and balanced handling over outright horsepower has been the Miata's defining trait across four generations since — even the modest power figures of the original and subsequent generations haven't stopped it from becoming, by Guinness World Records' own certification, the best-selling two-seat sports car in history, having sold well over a million units worldwide. Built at Mazda's Hiroshima operations, the Miata's specific bet — that a light, simple, genuinely fun-to-drive roadster mattered more to most buyers than raw power — has proven durable enough to outlast nearly every rival roadster launched to compete directly against it, making the Miata one of the clearest examples in automotive history of a manufacturer's original design philosophy staying essentially unchanged across more than three decades of continuous production.
VS
Chevrolet Corvette
The Chevrolet Corvette launched in 1953 as America's first mass-produced sports car, built initially with a fiberglass body — an unusual, cost-driven material choice at the time that turned out to give the car a distinctive lightness and, decades later, an unusually good resistance to the rust that eventually claims most steel-bodied classics of the same era. Across eight generations, the Corvette built its reputation on delivering genuine supercar-rivaling performance at a fraction of the price of European exotics — a formula that reached its most dramatic expression with the C8 generation launched in 2020, which moved the engine from its traditional front-of-the-car position to a mid-engine layout directly behind the driver, matching the basic architecture of a Ferrari or Lamborghini at a starting price closer to a well-equipped family sedan than an actual exotic car. That mid-engine shift had reportedly been considered internally at Chevrolet on and off for decades, with prototype mid-engine Corvettes built as far back as the 1960s and shelved multiple times, making the C8's eventual 2020 launch the culmination of one of the longest-running "what if" engineering debates in American automotive history. Built at GM's dedicated Bowling Green Assembly plant in Kentucky — home also to the National Corvette Museum, a purpose-built facility where many buyers can watch their own car built and take delivery directly on-site — the Corvette's seven-decade run as America's default "affordable exotic" has made it one of the most enduringly significant nameplates in the entire history of the sports car.
