Memento
"Memento" (2000), directed by Christopher Nolan, follows a man with severe short-term memory loss investigating his wife's murder, structured through an innovative reverse-chronological editing technique that lets the audience experience the same fragmented, disoriented uncertainty the amnesiac protagonist himself experiences. Its structural innovation, unfolding two interwoven timelines — one moving forward in black and white, one moving backward in color, eventually meeting in the middle — became one of the most studied and influential nonlinear narrative structures in modern American independent filmmaking. The film's use of amnesia as the direct structural engine of its storytelling, rather than simply a plot device explained through exposition, gave "Memento" a genuinely unique formal relationship between its central character's condition and its own narrative architecture. Its combination of its groundbreaking reverse-chronological structure and its genre-defining use of amnesia as narrative engine has made "Memento" widely regarded as the greatest and most structurally innovative amnesia film ever made.

50 First Dates
"50 First Dates" (2004), starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, follows a man who falls in love with a woman suffering from a rare form of amnesia that resets her short-term memory every time she sleeps, forcing him to win her over again each new day. Its comedic premise, built on the genuine emotional poignancy of a relationship that must be rebuilt from scratch on a daily basis, gave the film an unusually sincere emotional core relative to typical broad studio romantic comedies of the same era. The film's Hawaii setting and its warm, tropical visual atmosphere gave the story's repetitive daily-reset structure a genuinely appealing backdrop, softening what could otherwise have been a bleaker premise about the practical challenges of memory loss within a relationship. Its combination of its genuinely poignant memory-loss premise and its warm romantic comedy execution has made "50 First Dates" one of the most beloved and commercially successful amnesia films ever made.
