Memento
"Memento" (2000), directed by Christopher Nolan, follows a man with severe short-term memory loss investigating his wife's murder, structured through an innovative reverse-chronological editing technique that lets the audience experience the same fragmented, disoriented uncertainty the amnesiac protagonist himself experiences. Its structural innovation, unfolding two interwoven timelines — one moving forward in black and white, one moving backward in color, eventually meeting in the middle — became one of the most studied and influential nonlinear narrative structures in modern American independent filmmaking. The film's use of amnesia as the direct structural engine of its storytelling, rather than simply a plot device explained through exposition, gave "Memento" a genuinely unique formal relationship between its central character's condition and its own narrative architecture. Its combination of its groundbreaking reverse-chronological structure and its genre-defining use of amnesia as narrative engine has made "Memento" widely regarded as the greatest and most structurally innovative amnesia film ever made.

The Long Kiss Goodnight
"The Long Kiss Goodnight" (1996), starring Geena Davis, follows a small-town schoolteacher and mother who begins recovering fragments of a hidden past as a highly trained government assassin after a car accident triggers flashes of memory she never knew she had. Its gradual, escalating structure — starting from a suburban domestic setting before steadily revealing the protagonist's suppressed lethal skill set — inverted the more common amnesia-thriller pattern of a mysterious stranger discovering unknown abilities, instead building around a seemingly ordinary woman's hidden former identity. Davis's dual performance, convincingly embodying both the character's warm suburban-mother persona and her ruthlessly efficient former assassin identity, anchored the film's tonal shifts between domestic drama and hard-edged action thriller. Its combination of its inverted amnesia-reveal structure and Davis's genre-blending dual performance has made "The Long Kiss Goodnight" one of the most distinctive amnesia-driven action thrillers of the 1990s.
